The gravestone of Amelia Jane Harrison and her husband Charles.

Amelia Jane Harrison

Amelia Jane Harrison was born in Winterton, Lincolnshire in 1850. She grew up living with her parents in High Street, Winterton. Her father was a miller.

In 1878 she married Charles Cross (1839-1911) a widower 11 years her senior. He was a chemist and druggist and they lived in King Street and later in life moved to North Street on the outskirts of the town.

She died in 1917, six years after her husband and they are buried in Winterton Cemetery.

Music Manuscript Book inscribed ‘Amelia Jane Harrison Winterton June 20th 1860’

1st page of manuscript
First page of the manuscript
The manuscript book was bought by Adrian Carlton at an auction in Diss, Norfolk in early 2018. At first we thought it must be from Winterton-on-Sea in Norfolk but then on closer inspection, Lincolnshire could be seen scrawled faintly on the first page.

Although it was inscribed in ink by Amelia Jane Harrison in 1860, faintly underneath can be seen the names of Harry Tate, who appears to have been a relation of Amelia’s by marriage, and another with the surname Lovett.

We then discovered the website for All Saints’ Church in Winterton, Lincolnshire with a page devoted to West Gallery music. We arranged a visit to the church in October 2018 where Robin Shawyer showed us other manuscript books in the church’s collection which were in the same format (approximately A5) and with similar brown covers. Also we saw their wonderful collection of West Gallery wind instruments. There are photographs of the instruments and information about the West Gallery choir on the West Gallery Instruments page in the Church Heritage section of the All Saints’ Church website. In December 2018 Adrian donated the book to All Saints’ Church to add to their collection.
